Free Online College Courses, Harvard, MIT and more

This past year I took advantage of a MIT Open Courseware course for my daughters science option.   She wanted something that wasn't typical for her high school science option, so I found Kitchen Chemistry by MIT.  It was a good experience, following the teachers syllabus, and doing the assignments on her own, but it would have been nice to interact with a professor.  NOW YOU CAN.

"Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Wednesday announced a new nonprofit partnership, known as edX, to offer free online courses from both universities."

ALSO...

" Harvard and M.I.T. have a rival — they are not the only elite universities planning to offer free massively open online courses, or MOOCs, as they are known. This month, Stanford, Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan announced their partnership with a new commercial company, Coursera, with $16 million in venture capital. The Online Textbook Was Written By:

We are two college mathematics professors who grew weary of forcing our students to purchase expensive college algebra textbooks whose mathematical content has slowly degraded over the years. Our solution? Write our own. The twist? We made our college algebra book free and we distribute it as a .pdf file under the Creative Commons License.

Khan Academy UPDATE

I recently gave information about Khan Academy, but now that I have looked at it further, I have to comment again... IT IS THAT GOOD!

Khan Academy
delivers math and finance tutorials through Youtube videos. It is well detailed and my kids say it is very easy to follow. In addition to that, they have a free, adaptive math program available here. I can't believe this is free. I spent 2 hours on the site today, just testing myself and could not stop. The site finds your level and fills your learning gaps. Plus it progresses you through math seamlessly.

I plan to use this program this year AND make a few donations!

Another update 9/24/09

My kids have been using and enjoying this program for 3 months. Because of the way the program moves students can fly through concepts too quickly. This means they may be able to finish a unit but have not spent enough time in it to rememeber the concepts long term.

My suggestion is that you purchase a workbooks... basic math, pre algebra, algebra 2, geometry to go along with the lessons so give them extra practice and to test for long term retention. (You can also print worksheets from free worksheet websites)

Otherwise this program is excellent especially for test prep and relearning concepts.

American History on Video

This program is for college and highschool students and consists of 26 half-hour videos.

A Biography of America presents history not simply as a series of irrefutable facts to be memorized, but as a living narrative. Prominent historians -- Donald L. Miller, Pauline Maier, Louis P. Masur, Waldo E. Martin, Jr., Douglas Brinkley, and Virginia Scharff -- present America's story as something that is best understood from a variety of perspectives. Thought-provoking debates and lectures encourage critical analysis of the forces that have shaped America. First-person narratives, photos, film footage, and documents reveal the human side of American history -- how historical figures affected events, and the impact of these events on citizens' lives.
